Answer: The children were very excited about their trip to Kaziranga and Sivasagar that day. So they woke up early in the morning.

Answer: During their last holiday the children had visited their uncle in Tezpur.


Q3. Why is Assam unique ?

Answer: Assam is unique because it is a place with a rich heritage and diverse flora and fauna. It has scenic national parks, historical monuments, tea gardens and ancient temples one can visit.


Q4. What is a national park ?

Answer: A national park is a protected area for the purpose of conservation of wildlife. For example Kaziranga national park conserves the one horned rhinoceros.

Q5: How many National Parks are there in Assam?

Answer: There are five national parks in Assam.


Q6: What was Sivasagar formerly known as?

Answer: Sivasagar was formerly known as Rangpur.


Q7: Why did the children’s parents decide to take them to Sivasagar?

Answer: The children’s parents decide to take them someplace new on holidays every year. That year they decided on Sivasagar, the former Ahom capital from 1699-1788 (then known as Rangpur). Their father was sure the children would like to see the many ponds, palaces and temples from that period in the historical town.

Q8: When did the family reach Kaziranga?

Answer: The family reached Kaziranga early afternoon on the same day they had started. They checked in at a hotel that had a large compound and freshened up. They then sat on cane chairs in one corner of the veranda enjoying the greenery.

Answer: The full form of UNESCO is United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation.

Answer: Kaziranga game sanctuary was renamed the Kaziranga wildlife sanctuary because 'game' means animal hunting of animals. Inorder to protect and conserve animals the Kaziranga was renamed as the Kaziranga wildlife sanctuary.

Answer: The rhinoceros are herbivorous animals, they eat grass, leaves, fruits, water plants and branches of shrubs.

Q1. Write briefly the history of Kaziranga as a protected area.

Answer: In 1904, Mary Curzon, the wife of Lord Curzon, the viceroy of India visited Kaziranga. Mary Curzon heard that the Kaziranga was famous for rhino, but she could not find a single rhino there. So she requested her husband to take immediate measures to protect the rhinos. In 1905, the Kaziranga Reserve forest was created and in 1916 it was named as Kaziranga game sanctuary. Visitors were allowed to enter the park and hunting was strictly prohibited. In 1950 it was renamed as the Kaziranga wildlife sanctuary by P.D. Stracey and in 1974 it was designated as a National Park.

    The Kaziranga National Park is located in the state of Assam in the Nagaon and Golaghat districts. The history of the park as a protected area dates back to 1904 after the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon’s wife visited the premises. She was not able to see a single rhinoceros in the area that was supposed to be known for. She persuaded Lord Curzon to take measures to protect the animal facing threat of extinction. Lord Curzon made arrangements for protection of the rhinoceros. In June 1905 this area of Kaziranga was created as a protected  forest. Today, it is one of the biggest protected lands in the sub-Himalayan belt.

Q2. Write a short note on Talatal ghar.

Answer: Talatal ghar is a historical monument, it has four storeys above the ground and three storeys below the ground. There were two secret tunnels inside the Talatal ghar, one is 16 km long led to Gargaon Palace and other is 3 km long led to the Dikhow river.

    Talatal ghar is situated near Rang Ghar in the present district of Charaideo. It had 4 storeys above the ground and 3 storeys (closed for tourists) below the ground. There were 2 secret tunnels. 1 which was 16km long, led to the Gargaon Palace and the other, which was 3km long, led to the Dikhow river. They were used as routes to escape enemy attacks. Ammunition store called ‘Khar Ghar’ is situated near the palace.
    The Ahom monument Talatal Ghar in Assam was initially built as an army base. It  was built by Rajeswara Singha.
    The ground floor had store rooms, stables and servant quarters, while the upper floors were for the royal family. It has been built with bricks and varieties of cement and an arched door that resembles Mughal styles of architecture; a large terrace, a temple with octagonal structure and a few small chambers form the major portion of the edifice.

Q3. Write a note on Charaideo Maidam.

Answer: Charaideo Maidam is a burial ground for the Ahom kings and nobles. It is 22km away from Sivasagar town, the founder of the Ahom dynasty Siu-Ka-Pha made Charaideo his first capital. The Ahom believed Charaideo Maidam to be the home to their ancestral gods. The maidam has a tomb like the pyramids in Egypt.

    Charaideo Maidam was established by the Ahom king chao lung siu - ka - pha in 1228. It is about 30 km from sivasagar town of Assam on the sivasagar sonari road. Charaideo is the first capital of Assam Kingdom although it was changed later. However, the place continued to have significance and housed the maidams or tombs of Ahom rulers. A maidam has a domical superstructure with an underground vault that has one or more chambers. The superstructure has a mound with a pavilion in the shape of a hemisphere on the top. There is an octagonal dwarf wall around the maidam. There are actually over 150 maidams; but only 30 of these are protected.
